4H Memorial Camp- Guest Blog!

It's the Wandering Jellybean with our very special guest blogger, Miss SC2004. YAY! JB

Check in:
This past week, my sisters and I went 4H Memorial Camp. We left Sunday afternoon and stayed there until Thursday afternoon. We arrived at camp and checked in at the Rec(reation) Shelter. We received nametags,

Wristbands, and had our head lice-checked (hence the smiley face)

Then headed back to our cabin to unpack.
Color teams:
The campers stay with one or two counselors in one of the 32 cabins (20 girls’ cabins on one side of camp, the rest for boys on the other side).

Campers were also divided into “color teams”. Each year the staff picks a category, this year it was Greek gods and goddesses. On the back of your name tag it said what god/goddess team you were in.

The god(desses) were:
  • Zeus (King of the gods, god of the sky)
  • Hera (Zeus’ wife & sister, queen of the gods, goddess of marriage and women)
  • Poseidon (Zeus’ brother, god of the sea)
  • Demeter (Zeus’ sister, goddess of agriculture)
  • Hestia (Zeus’ sister, goddess of fire and the hearth)
  • Aphrodite (Goddess of love and beauty)
  • Athena (Daughter of Zeus, goddess of crafts, wisdom, and battle strategy)
  • Ares (Son of Zeus & Hera, god of war)
  • Hephaestus (Son of Zeus & Hera, god of the forges and metalworking)
  • Apollo (Son of Zeus & Leto, Artemis’ twin brother, god of the sun, healing, and archery)
  • Artemis (Daughter of Zeus and Leto, Apollo’s twin sister, goddess of the hunt and the moon)
  • Hermes (Son of Zeus, god of boundaries, thieves, and travelers)
These color teams competed throughout the week. I was on Hera (9th place): but the winner was… [drum roll please]… Hermes. Campers also had the option to recycle cans and bottles to earn points for their color team.
Meals:
Campers ate three meals a day in the Dining Hall (aka Mess Hall).

The food was served family style and campers cleaned up after themselves. For each meal a different cabin group had to “trot” which means they set the table and ran through the kitchen to get food.

Activity periods:
Every full day of camp, campers had two two-hour long activity periods. At times like this, campers could go to…

Creation Station –aka Cray-Stay— (we made things like slime, lava lamps, and ice cream)

Arts and Crafts

Outdoor Ed

Waterfront (swimming/boating)

Rockwall

Rec (team games)

or Trading Post (camp store/concession stand)

I had a lot of fun at all of the stations.

Ultimate Camper:
At each station (except for trading post), you could do an activity to earn a bead. Campers strung the beads onto their nametags. People with all six beads were “ultimate campers”. Campers who did this earned points for their color team. I was an ultimate camper.

Clubs:
On the first day, campers chose a “club” to be in. Different clubs did different things. I was in Cinema Club (we made a movie), but some of the other clubs were Challenge Course (my sisters did this one) and Magic Club. Clubs presented on the last day.

Camp was definitely a lot of fun!
