Fire Twins

The Boston Globe
NOTORIOUS CRIMINAL CALIX SENT TO PRISON
Calix was apprehended at approximately 7:39 last night. Authorities were called to the scene only to find Calix tied up and sitting in a circle of fire. A witness said that Calix had broken into her house and stole her grandmother's pink diamond earrings. Just as he was getting away there was a bright flash of light, and then two girls known as the Fire Twins arrived at the scene. They caught Calix and tied him up leaving him for the authorities. On behalf of the entire city we thank the Fire Twins for what they did. Hopefully we will be able to thank them in person soon. (They never stay at the scene after they save the day.)

Marie set the newspaper down after reading it out loud to her sister Alexa. She pushed her long, wavy red hair out of her face. She looked over at her twin. They looked exactly the same all the way down to the last freckle. Their fiery red hair and jade green eyes made them about as recognizable as purple grass. Alexa was too preoccupied by her cereal to notice. Marie stood up and went to get ready for school.
In her room she put on a purple tank top with denim shorts, shoved her books into her ordinary black backpack, pulled her hair back into a ponytail and walked into the hall. When she entered the kitchen she saw Alexa had changed too. She was wearing a green dress that hung loosely around her. Her fiery red hair was down and partially concealed by a black fedora and her books were all in her brown backpack. Just as they were leaving their mom's loud voice rang through the house reminding them that their cousin, Clara, was visiting that afternoon. They hurried out to catch the bus.
After school they rushed to their rooms, changed into black workout clothes and jogged out to their large backyard. They started stretching and running through warm up drills. Their mom, Jane, came out in purple workout attire.
"Good job girls! Bring it in." she said in her loud voice. "Today we are going to run through some drills and work on your fire powers. Don't forget you are the Fire Twins!"
At that they heard a little gasp behind them, and when the turned around they saw their friend Sarah and she had clearly heard everything.
"Hey, Sarah," the twins' mom said.
"Hey," Sarah squeaked.
"Let us explain," Marie said while Alexa nodded in agreement.
It took a little while to explain everything, but they managed. Marie explained how they were the crime fighting duo known as the Fire Twins and how they had magic powers. When Sarah asked them to show their powers. They both assumed ready positions and then lit the ground in front of them on fire.
"Well, well, well," an all too familiar voice said from behind them, "What do we have here?"
They spun around.
"Clara!" Jane exclaimed, "We weren't expecting you until later!"
"My bus left early," she said with a wicked grin on her face, "I almost missed it. But I am glad I didn't."
"How much did you see?" asked Alexa.
"Enough to know that you are the Fire Twins. Oh, man, the reporters are going to be pleased."
"But you won't tell them, right?" Marie asked both of them.
"No," said Sarah quickly.
"I'm not makin' any promises," said Clara.
"Please," Alexa begged.
"Maybe I will, maybe I won't."
"What do you want from us?" Marie asked.
"I can't just threaten my favorite cousins?"
They stared at her.
"All right, all right. I want you to take me with you on your next mission."
"It is too dangerous," protested Marie and Alexa's mom.
"Then I think I'll make a quick call to the Boston Globe..."
"OK, fine, you can go." Marie said quickly.
They spent the rest of the afternoon trying to find an appropriate costume for Clara. They finally settled on a red dress and a black cape. That night, when their alarm went off, they went out to stop a burglar.
"Keep quiet," Alexa commanded.
They positioned themselves along the burglar's exit route. The alarms rang.
"Ready?" Marie mouthed.
Clara and Alexa gave the thumbs up. She held up one finger, two fingers and then three fingers. The burglar raced through the door into a net the girls had strung between them. They quickly tied him up and placed him in their ring of fire. They quickly left the scene.
After watching the twins at work, Clara agreed not to tell anyone their secret. And the next morning the Boston Globe's front page headliner was...
THE FIRE TWINS ARE AT IT AGAIN!
